3 Reasons to Drink Water in Winter

During the colder months of Winter, it’s easy to believe you don’t need as much water. I mean, it’s not as if you are profusely sweating and you just don’t feel that thirsty.  Contrary to what you may think, staying properly hydrated is just as important during the winter months as it is in summer.  Here are three reasons why you need to keep drinking water when it’s cold outside:

1. Staying hydrated protects your immune system

Your body’s moist mucus membranes helps to keep you healthy. Although the name may not sound very pretty, mucus plays a pretty important role in keeping us well. Our mucus membranes protects your cells by acting as a barrier to defend you from infectious bacteria and viruses that you may breathe in.  However, our mucus membranes need to be moist in order to do this job effectively. Unfortunately, the cold, crisp winter air can easily dry them out if you don’t keep your fluid levels up and this can make you more susceptible to colds and flus.

2. Your body still needs water

Your daily quota for water doesn’t change during the winter. On average, you still need at least 1.5 litres a day (and more if you exercise or have a physical job).  Ensuring you drink enough water helps you in so many different ways including flushing toxins out of your system,   lubricating your joints (so helping to alleviate joint stiffness & pain), preventing fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.   Most importantly, if you are watching your weight, adequate water consumption prevents you from overeating as the water helps to ‘fill’ your stomach.

3. It’s easier to become dehydrated

When it’s cold your sweat actually evaporates quicker, hence the reason you don’t feel the need for water in the same way that you do during those hot summer months.  But just because you don’t feel like you are thirsty doesn’t mean that you are not. Take a look at your urine next time you go to the bathroom. If it’s dark or bright yellow then it’s a sign your body needs more water.   If you just find it too difficult to drink cool water during winter, then warm it up!  A herbal tea or a squeeze of lemon into boiled water makes a healthy, hydrating winter drink.
