Enjoy  ALCOHOL in moderation this Christmas

You’ve been working hard all year, (managing the cost-of-living pressures) and just like that, Christmas is almost here! (less than 34 days…) so naturally, you want to have some down time and enjoy some ‘Christmas cheer’. We all do!

This time of year, we all have an increase in festivities, parties, family gatherings, work functions, barbeques and more. While it’s a great time of year, it can also be a time of opportunity, and of excess, especially when it comes to ALCOHOL consumption.

Of course, it’s not just overindulging in yummy food that is the problem that you and our waistlines face over this time:  overdoing it in the drinks department can pile on the extra kilos too.  Today, we will outline the ‘best option’ alcoholic drinks that we could choose to have the least effect on the scales.

The general rule of thumb is simple:  the higher the alcohol content of the drink, the more calories it will contain.  This is because one gram of alcohol contains 7 calories, and these are ‘empty’ calories which have NO nutritional value.  For example, a full-strength stubby of beer contains 145 calories whereas the same sized stubby of light beer only contains 100 calories.  If wine is more your thing, there is a wide-variety of low-alcohol wines on the market which are excellent for those watching their weight.

Alternatively, you can halve your caloric intake when drinking wine by pouring yourself only a half glass and topping up with soda water!  Half wine & sparkling mineral water is the perfect drop for any celebration.

If spirits are your drink of choice, then there are certainly ways you can indulge without packing on the kilos.  First things first:  AVOID PRE-MIXED CANS OF SPIRITS!  Most of them are full of sugar due to the soft drinks they are mixed with.  A Bundaberg Rum & Coke contain 250 calories – yes, it’s a lot! Talk about a sugar overload!  However, if you mix your own Bundaberg Rum and Diet coke (with a standard nip of rum), the same drink would only be 65 calories – so much better!  Diet soft drinks and soda water/sparkling mineral water are the best zero-calorie mixers and, even better, just go for a half nip of spirits when making your own to halve your alcohol / calorie intake. Also consider alcohol free spirits. Enjoy the freedom to opt out without being left out. Indulge in the classics with Lyre’s non-alcoholic spirits, a much healthier choice. You can get it at Dan Murphy’s and other similar outlets. Mix with sparkling water – a great alternative! More information on how best to enjoy your festive drinks, and NOT destroy all the other good work you have done so far on food, exercise and motivation, is available in our Christmas Program. Most importantly, you need to pace yourself when indulging in a few Christmas drinks.  The best way to do this is to have a glass of water between drinks.  This is a sure-fire way to ‘slow down’ your drinking rate and therefore, decrease your overall calorie intake.
