Five Reasons to Lose Weight NOW (besides wanting to look good in a bikini)

As a weight loss consultant, one question that I always ask a new client is ‘What is your main reason for wanting to lose weight?’  Often, I hear the same responses and the most common ones are: ‘to look better’, ‘to be healthier’, and ‘to fit back into my clothes’.  Getting to your goal weight is worth it for so many reasons, but the ones below have nothing to do with how you look in the mirror:


Your Kids Will Eat Better:  If your child is overweight, your weight loss may benefit them, too.  This is because you will be preparing healthier foods and these meals will certainly help to shape your children’s eating habits well into the future.  So let the whole family know that they are all embarking on a ‘health kick’ and let your kids get excited about the new meals you will be enjoying as a family.  If you don’t have children yet then, if you’re a woman, losing weight now can also set your kids up for a better future.

 Your risk of cancer will decrease:  Most people know that smoking and excess sun exposure can increase your cancer risk, but a lesser known fact is that obesity is linked to cancer, too.  This is because excess weight creates increased inflammation in the body and this becomes a perfect ‘breeding ground’ for cancer cells to proliferate.  The good news, however, is that you can decrease levels of inflammation by losing just five percent of your body weight, according to a Cancer Research study of postmenopausal women.

Ha ha).  The two most common sleep issues – sleep apnoea (Apnoea means ‘no breathe’ which means you literally stop breathing while you are sleeping) and snoring, are often caused by excess weight around the neck and leads to interrupted, restless sleeping patterns.  A small weight loss of 5% can vastly improve these two troublesome sleeping conditions (and after more weight loss, these may both totally disappear).

You will have more energy:  After you begin to drop a few kilos, you will soon notice that you have much more energy. One reason is because you’re eating more nutritious foods that will enhance your energy levels.  The other is because you are literally carrying around much less weight, which means your body will have much more energy to ‘burn’
