Keep Your Weight Under Control this Winter

Winter weight gain often feels inevitable—it’s amazing how the cooler weather can just make being healthier so much harder.  The colder, shorter days make it more difficult to get outdoors and & exercise…and why drink water when hot chocolate seems much more satisfying? It is important to lay down some ‘rules’ to keep you on track for Winter – otherwise, you could get quite a rude shock when Spring comes around!

  1. Pack your plate with protein: If the cold is making your stomach feel empty, you need to get more protein.  Protein is important for keeping you feeling fuller for longer and helps stabilize blood sugar levels.  Even if you have a piece of fruit for afternoon tea, follow it with 5-6 protein packed almonds to ‘slow down’ the digestive process, so you delay the inevitable hunger pangs before dinner.
  2. Always have a glass of water or herbal tea in your hand: Research suggests the some 75 percent of Australians may be chronically dehydrated and the problem is that we often mistake dehydration for hunger. If the thought of water is not terribly appealing, try drinking it hot with a squeeze of lemon juice. This is a great drink to have first thing in the morning to flush out your kidneys.
  3. Eat lots of soups:    Making soup can be likened to making a big pot of a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.  This is because when you fry foods, you can lose a lot of the nutrient value in the cooking process.  However, vegetables, meat and / or poultry cooked directly in soup retains much more of their natural nutrient content. We have some great soup recipes in our Recipe Book that are low in calories BUT will fill your belly.  If you are busy during the week, get into the habit of making up a pot of soup on the weekend and then storing it in 5 plastic containers in your fridge:  this takes care of lunch during the week!
