As Christmas only comes once a year, bear in mind that it is ok to indulge…however, you just need to control how what you have and how much. Firstly, just choose ONE dessert (and only one) that is your absolute favourite and have treat yourself to a small portion. For example, if Christmas pudding is your weakness, then have a slither (and not a massive hunk) and forget the cream & ice-cream with it…just add a little custard. Or if Pavlova is more your thing, have a small serve with a LOT of fruit (and minimal cream).
If you have a sweet tooth, then I am sure you are already dreading how you are going to manage the temptation of dessert on Christmas Day. Fear not! This week, we will be discussing how you can still enjoy dessert on the big day without causing major calorie overload!
If you are unable to trust yourself though when it comes to dessert time, then make sure you prepare a Christmas Day dessert that you can indulge in guilt-free.
How about some of these healthy ideas:
- Luckily, some of the most amazing fruits are in season over summer and with a little effort can be dressed up as treats for entertaining. For example, serve washed cherries or mixed berries in a white bowl and use as an edible table centrepiece
- Slice or chop a selection of fresh fruit to make fruit salad sundaes or a platter of seasonal fruit – try grapes, kiwifruit, passionfruit, berries, nectarines, peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, melons, pineapple, mango or pawpaw.
- Fresh strawberries chopped and heated on the stove can be blended then stirred into reduced fat vanilla ice-cream as a healthy alternative to rich sugary toppings
- Make-over your usual trifle recipe by using a low fat custard, replacing the jam or jelly layer with fresh berries and skipping the heavy cream topping or substituting it with low fat vanilla yoghurt
- Layers of sliced fruit and low fat yoghurt topped with toasted muesli or sliced nuts for crunch in a clear glass makes a colourful and healthy parfait
- Poach fruits (try nectarines, peaches, apricots or plums) in fruit juice or wine for a warm dessert – serve with low-fat custard or natural yoghurt
- Cool down with fruit sorbet or make your own by freezing a selection of fruits the day before and blending with a splash of fruit juice when you’re ready to serve
