Easter is upon us yet again! It’s important to remember that Easter is not an excuse for a 4-day chocolate gorge. However, it is estimated that Australians spend over $200 million on chocolate at Easter, so there is a whole lot of chocolate eating going on around the country. For those of you trying to lose weight (or just not wanting to be sick from overindulgence), we would like to suggest the following tips to keep your excess calorie intake to a minimum!
Tip 1 – Make Sunday your ‘treat’ day
Instead of feasting all every day of the long weekend, select Sunday as your ‘special’ day. Of course, it would be best to think small and choose a few small eggs: a small, solid chocolate egg contains 36 calories, so 3-4 of them is not to ‘damaging’ to your waistline (particularly if you do some exercise afterwards to burn off those extra chocolate calories). Naturally, the story with chocolate is that the bigger the egg, the greater the damage. For example, a relatively ‘small’ hollow Easter egg weighs around 50g and contains 270 calories while a large chocolate rabbit weighs around 150g and has 770 cals – eek!
Tip 2 – Quality not Quantity If you do indulge on Easter Sunday make sure you buy good quality chocolate. Don’t buy cheap eggs from Crazy Clarks but, instead, purchase some quality chocolate in a small portion size. For example treat yourself to some small Lindt eggs (i.e. the ones in the packets) & enjoy every bite, instead of purchasing cheaper chocolates in bigger quantities.
Tip 3 – Change your Easter Gift Giving
Make a rule with family and friends that there is no chocolate giving this year. Move away from the chocolate tradition and start something new. Why not try a fruit hamper, movie tickets, itunes cards or even a bunch of flowers? Much healthier for all involved!
Tip 4 – Get Everyone Involved in an Easter Egg Hunt
If you have kids why not set up an outdoor Easter egg hunt? Include the children and adults and make it challenging – most of all include lots of running and laughing. Activities like this burn calories, bring the family together and get the day off to a fun start.
Tip 5 – Enjoy a guilt-free chocolate drink
If you want a chocolate fix over Easter – but are determined to go ‘cold turkey’ on anything egg / bunny shaped – try a Jarrah Choc-O-Lait (or something similar) instant chocolate drink. If prepared as directed, it only contains 46 calories and 1 gram of fat. Perfect!
