Keeping On Track This Easter

We Aussies certainly have a sweet tooth – you could say, we have a pretty big chocolate addiction.  Statistics show that Australians scoff around 110,000 tonnes of chocolate each year – which equates to a whopping 5.8 kilograms per person per year!  For many people, avoiding the sweet stuff is a daily struggle, but Easter time takes the challenge up a notch! With Easter eggs, bilbies and bunnies tempting us at every turn – it might seem near impossible. This week, we are going to discuss some strategies to help you stay strong over the Easter break:

  • Avoid the Easter egg aisle in the supermarket. The choice to eat chocolate begins when you shop. If you don’t bring it home, you can’t eat it.  To help you with this promise, tell your family and friends you are having a chocolate-free Easter, and challenge them to join you!
  • If you are going to allow yourself some chocolate, purchase a small (less than 50g) dark chocolate Easter egg. Dark chocolate is generally lower in sugar than milk chocolate and contain important anti-oxidants that are beneficial to your health. Once you’ve eaten your ‘allowed’ Easter treat, that’s it. Don’t keep bingeing all weekend.
  • If you’re still craving chocolate, satisfy your sweet tooth with a guilt-free, low-sugar hot chocolate. A Jarrah Choc-O-Lait is an instant chocolate drink that can satisfy the most demanding sweet tooth.  If prepared as directed, it only contains 46 calories and 1 gram of fat per cup.  Perfect!

If you feel your resolve weakening, consider this: it takes two hours of brisk walking or 60 minutes of jogging to work off a large 100 gram egg.  Even a small 7 gram solid Easter egg will mean you have to walk for 8 minutes or jog for 4 minutes to get rid of the extra calories.  So is it really worth it?  A moment of pleasure on the lips means stubborn fat on the hips, so keep your willpower intact and enjoy Easter guilt-free.
