Summer Bodies Are Made In Winter

It’s here whether you like it or not.  Winter has arrived with a vengeance and, to be perfectly honest, it is true that you are most prone to putting on weight compared to any other time of the year.  This week, I will explain to you why weight gain is ‘easier to do’ during winter and some ways you can avoid gaining a few unwanted kilos over the coming months.

It’s proven that in winter you do eat more ‘comfort’ foods and that is due to the shorter days.  Less hours of sunlight means that your body produces less serotonin which is a hormone that is produced in your brain to influence your mood.  Less production of this important hormone means that you seek the urge to boost your serotonin levels by eating foods like sugar and starchy carbohydrates as these foods definitely have a psychological effect in helping us to feel ‘happy’.  Naturally, the problem is if you overdo it on these types of food over winter, you can expect that fitting into your spring clothes will be a struggle come September.

So how can you avoid the winter kilo ‘creep’?  Here are some tips below:

  • Increase your protein intake: Protein takes longer to break down into energy than carbohydrates like rice and pasta, so will keep you fuller & sustain your energy levels for longer.  Throw some meat and vegetables in your slow cooker (without potato) as this will not only help you to stay warm but give you the energy ‘boost’ you need to keep going for hours.
  • Exercise: Exercise is your best weapon against winter weight gain.  Strength training can really help to keep your metabolism revving.  For best results, hit the gym at least three times a week and plan a workout routine that will work your biggest muscles.  This means you should focus on your legs as they burn more calories than any other part of your body.  If you combine this with some cardio activity — 15 minutes or more per workout – this will really help you avoid packing on the extra weight.
  • Get some sun:  Whenever the opportunity presents make sure you get out into the sun. Not only does serotonin act as a mood-boosting brain chemical it is also partly responsible for feelings of fullness. Even a heavy dose of artificial light, especially in the morning, may help suppress food cravings and the urge to overeat.
