Weight loss fads come and go – and over the years there have been some pretty radical and very funny ideas.  However, once people tried out these ‘fantastic’ weight loss aids (and realised that they didn’t work!), they simply disappeared.   This week, I want to look at some of the more ‘interesting’ weight loss techniques that have been used over the last 50 years.  See if you can remember them:

  1. Vibrating Fat Loss Machines: This was the machine where you stood on a platform, placed a thick belt around your bottom and then let the belt oscillate wildly, apparently ‘shaking’ away all of your excess fat cells!  What a great idea – pity it didn’t work.  The vibrating belts enjoyed their greatest popularity from the 1930s to the 1960s, but formal scientific studies have since proven that they have no weight-loss or muscle-toning benefits at all.
  2. Sauna Suits: Oh dear, these things are totally useless – and downright dangerous.  Basically, a sauna suit is pair of non-breathable, plastic overalls (see photo) which you were supposed to wear for hours at a time to ‘sweat away’ all your excess fat.  As we know, there was no fat being melted away – you would simply perspire enormously causing extreme dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.  Funnily enough, boxers and jockeys still use this technique to ‘strip kilograms’ before their official weigh-in.  However any drop on the scales is purely fluid NOT a reflection of actual fat loss.
  3. The ‘Eat More Sugar’ Diet: Can you believe that there was a book in 1971 called ‘Eat More Sugar’?  This was right at the time where fat was considered the ‘bad boy’ and the sole cause of heart disease and people were encouraged to avoid it at all costs.  So this wonderful book actively encouraged readers not to eat any fat (even good ones like nuts, avocado etc) while eating as much sugar as you chose including lollies, soft drinks etc as these foods are fat-free!  Talk about a weight-loss and blood sugar disaster.
